Coaching Questionnaires

Please answer all questions relating to knowledge of the game, volleyball mechanics, and situations.

1.  Mid-Line or Lateral Passing, which is better? Please defend your argument from one of the two (2) passing techniques. Or state your argument for both.
2.  For the arm swing during the attacks: 'grab the tag' 'flip the pony' OR elbow high and back (main difference here is the hand starts either behind the head, and all movement is at the elbow, or the hand starts beside the head, with the elbow back, and movement starts at the shoulder, then moves through the elbow extension). Which technique you would best describe to be more effective? Please explain why?

3.  Do you prefer to teach your players to swing blocking or lateral blocking? Why?

4.  Defensive positioning: Block angle dig line, block line dig angle. “There are many positions with little time and little quality of players.” What would be your best way to instruct your three (3) defensive back row players to position themselves when your opponent’s primary hitter is located on their right front?

5.  When passing (not overhead passing): Facing where the ball is coming from OR where you are passing to? Please explain your reasoning to best instruct your players for passing effectively during service receive.

6.  Setters Footwork: Last two steps Left-Right OR Right Left? Why?

7. You coach a bunch of excited 14 year old girls (travel team) showing a lot progress throughout practices. The team scrimmage against their fellow club team mates (non-travel) and won all five sets. Their first local tournament your team finished third in Gold, very happy team. The following tournament, your team lost the first three matches, going into bracket play some players showing signs of giving up. Players were arguing, crying, and not talking.
What went wrong? What should you have done before the match? How would you control the situation during the match? What would be your next steps during your upcoming practices?

8. You have started having your team play more pepper drills in practice, and you feel this will increase total ball control. Pepper is a drill that players overlook as a valuable tool to improve series of skills. What are some other advantages in peppering?

9. What would your typical practice be like for your team? Is there something(s) you focus on each practice? What drills do you do or do you scrimmage a lot? If so, what are you focusing on during your scrimmages?
